Asteroid City

Welcome to the mind of Wes Anderson. We’re sure you’ve visited before, as the filmmaker has created several papier-machee-pastel-dollhouse wonders, the host of which were all immediately as indelibly affixed to the coveted expression: “film classic.” To beguile, I shall attempt to capture the tenor of the genius auteur, as has been beautifully displayed within each masterwork of Anderson’s twenty-plus years of cinematic creation. Furthermore, I would, with joy, invite perusal if not unmitigated awe of every spectacle he has created, especially the most recent insight into Wes Anderson’s universe that is the Universal Pictures production of “Asteroid City” (2023).

Phew! Can you tell I’ve watched the film?

If you’re beginning to feel intimidated, don’t. Grammar has always been a supporting character in Wes Anderson’s films. That is to say, the filmmaker’s brand of proper English plays a Shakespearean role in the overall setup and hilarity of the comedic narrative.

“Asteroid City” is for everyone. Well, certainly it was made for those who appreciate rich storytelling that doesn’t take itself extremely seriously. Those who love to laugh at nuanced character writing and the roster of skillful players so often attached to Wes Anderson’s films will also love the film.

Nay-sayers, watch and learn. There are surprises and laughs and even an alien. I only stopped laughing long enough to nod at how smartly dressed the film truly was. In my opinion, it’s another classic for the books.
