Renfield (Review)

The movie for this weekend was “Renfield” (Universal Pictures 2023). Released in theatres this past April, the film is currently streaming on Peacock. Directed by Chris McKay of “The Lego Movie” (Warner Bros. 2014) and “The Lego Movie 2” (Warner Bros. 2019) fame, the film stars Oscar winner Nicolas Cage, Nicholas Hoult, Awkwafina and Ben Schwartz. The story is by Robert Kirkman, whose graphic novel and television credits include respective versions of “The Walking Dead” and “Invincible.”

Adapted from “Dracula” by Bram Stoker, the film “Renfield” follows its titular character, who is the familiar of the storied vampire. Beyond the grave of his immortal master, in other words when he’s not feeding and taking care of Dracula, Renfield navigates the modern world. Times have changed and mental health is something not only to be explored but fought for. Renfield discovers this in a support group chockablock full of colorfully funny characters from all walks of life. The thing they have in common: codependency issues.

The film takes off and doesn’t at all let you down. Both Nicks give stellar performances. However, as one should expect of Nicolas Cage, by taking command of an already funny idea, he does his thing and steals the f*cking show! Hilarity ensues and abounds from his every toothy monologue, as he portrays the character of Dracula as a malignant narcissist. He even gives the audience the best (most accurate) Bela Lugosi homage impression in history.

Awkwafina and Ben Schwartz do the bulk of the heavy lifting, by supporting the main cast with their patented performances, and by enriching the overall story. The pair playing off one another provides comedic as well as emotional turns to the film’s main plot points.

With a run time of only one hour and thirty-three minutes, this is a film you shouldn’t leave unwatched. Check it out in theatres or on Peacock because J.P. says it’s good!
