Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (Review)

"Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" is a thrilling adventure movie directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, and written by Jonathan Goldstein, John Francis Daley, and Michael Gilio. Starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, and Regé-Jean Page, the film will excite both fans of the tabletop game and newcomers to the fantasy genre.

The movie takes the "Dungeons and Dragons" approach with a slower start to set up the backstory of the characters, which may lose some viewers looking for immediate action. However, for those who appreciate well-crafted world-building, this will be a great way to get immersed in the fantasy world.

While there are a few conveniences that help move the plot along, ("hither / thither" I'm looking at you) even the overly convenient moments add some fun and excitement to the story. These moments may be convenient, but they make for some stunning set pieces and keep the film entertaining throughout.

The acting in "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" is great, with strong performances from the entire cast. Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, and Regé-Jean Page shine in their roles and had great chemistry which was also apparent in the gag reel that accompanied the title on Vudu.  Co-stars Justice Smith and Sophia Lillis were equally endearing and the whole cast genuinely looked like they thoroughly enjoyed the experience. And Oh! let's not forget about the cameos, which are a welcome surprise that add an extra layer of unexpected comedy to an already light-hearted film.

The magic in the film, particularly the time stop spell, is visually stunning and adds to the overall fantasy element of the story and the action scenes are well-choreographed and keep the audience on the edge of their seats. I also heard a rumor that the fight scenes held true to the actual Dungeons and Dragons gameplay order and mechanics, but I will leave that for the dungeon masters to decide.

Take it from J.J., "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" provided some genuinely funny moments, with enough good jokes scattered throughout the film that will leave you laughing. The film's slower start may be a turn-off for some viewers, but the excellent set pieces, strong acting, and thrilling action make this a must-see for any fan of the fantasy genre.
